Retail trade comprises establishments which engaged in retailing merchandise generally without transformation. Retailing process is the distribution of merchandise and retailers are therefore, organized to sell merchandise in small quantities to the public. Retail trade includes stores and non store retailers.
Retail stores operate fixed point of locations and have extension displays of merchandise to attract the consumers. They typically sell goods for household consumption and also institutional clients. Some types of store retailers are also serve the after sale services like repairs and installation. Retailing method of non store retailers is different.
The establishments of this trade reach customers and market merchandise with methods such as the publishing of paper and catalogs, door to door solicitation, selling from portable stalls and contribution vending machines. Buying of goods for resale is a characteristic feature of retail trade and it is different from establishments in the agriculture and manufacturing industries.
Retail is the second largest industry in the U.S according to number of establishments and this sector is one of the largest worlds wide. Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailers and company with more than $300 billion sales annually. Indian retail sector is rising for greater international participation. it creates new an better employment opportunities by introducing modern retail formats , technology and distribution.
Retail trade is an important part of our economy growth and of our daily lives. It includes diverse businesses such as departmental stores, supermarkets, gas stations and car dealers. The National Retail Federation is the biggest world's retail trade association comprises all retail formats, catalog, internet and independent stores.
It also represents more than 100 states including national and international retail associations. Buyers play an important role in the retail trade; they may buy for a departmental store or a chain of stores. Those who work for larger retail businesses often handle only a few related lines of goods that they purchase such as sport's wears or toy wear.
